Shoeboxes for Seniors

The Shoeboxes for Seniors program was started in April 2003 by Sharon Hanna to help fill a need seen by Canadian Aid for Chernobyl.  Many seniors living in the affected regions are destitute and lacking in basic hygiene items.  These boxes are lovingly packed with essential items: toothbrushes and paste, hand and body cream, deodorant, combs, brushes, hand soap, face cloths, small towels, shampoo, conditioner, facial tissue, body powder, shaving cream, razors, after shave, band-aids as well as some personal items directed for a man or woman such as scarves, hard candy, socks, pens and note paper.  Also collected are; lap quilts, nursing uniforms, material for quilts and yarn for mittens, hats, scarves and socks.

These boxes have not only delivered these basic items but brought the knowledge that there are people in the world that care.  This alone is almost overwhelming for these recipients!

From 400 boxes in 2003 to 1,300 boxes in 2010 and 800 boxes in 2016, this program continues to have a tremendous impact.  If you would like to donate boxes or other items mentioned above please contact Mary Bernard at 613-342-6589.
